Planting out problems

I didn't put enough soil in my containers so they started drying out really often. They were starting to look bad so I planted out 100 or so yesterday evening. However, I thought I could just plunk out all the seedlings and plant them HOS. This worked for a few but most just fell as one big heap into my hands. It didn't seem to matter if the soil was very moist or rather dry. I think I will have at least a few seedling of each container make it. One problem I noted was with the juice containers and such was that nothing wanted to come out of those very well. The milk jugs and 2 liters were the easiest to get the HOS out of. However, am I going about it wrong? Do I need to get the seedlings out some other way? I think our abnormally warm April temps haven't help things but the jugs are in direct sunlight about half the day. Is shade better?
