Onion Sets

I haven't planted these in years, so decided to try again last year. I bought sets from McKenzie, and it was a failure. This year, I planted spanish, white and red sets that I bought at the co-op. Both years, I planted them about the 26th of April. Again, complete failure. I am obviously missing something major!! What am I doing wrong?

Do they just rot in the ground? Any growth on them before they die? Maybe you are planting them too soon for zone 4?

I planted them as soon as the soil could be worked, according to directions. I had approximately 1" sets, planted 6" deep. Think I am remembering this correctly. They all produced green tops, some produced scapes, but none more that doubled in size.

You planted them too deep. Plant them with the tip just covered. You planted at the right time.

Thanks Yopper. I don't think I planted them quite that deep, but it sure sounds like too deep!!
