Definately plants. I tried both plants and seed of the same variety this year and the plants yielded much larger onions. Plant them about 6 inches apart.

I had a double row of garlic this year about 5 feet long and probably used about that much seed. Remember to plant only the larger cloves. Use the rest for cooking. Small cloves yield small heads.

I agree, onion plants work better for me than seed.

Garlic and onions both like 6" between plants, and about 12" between rows. I plant mine in beds containing five 10' rows, so each bed has 100 onions (or garlic) and measures 5' x 10'. You will need a 2-3' space between beds so you can access the plants. If you have the room, four rows per bed is easier to manage.

How many plantable cloves are in 2 lbs of garlic varies greatly with the variety and bulb size. I plant large hardnecks and usually get about 30-35 large cloves per pound.
