The sprouted garlic should be ok as long as it`s still green and alive. Haven`t planted in anything smaller than 1/3 heighth plastic barrels,which worked great. I planted CLOVES 3-4 inch in from sides and 6-8 inches apart, 1 inch deep. Harvest when about 1/2 of leaves turn brown on most varieties.(May-early June) I usually plant from mid October to end of November for best results. Hope this helps. ~Scott~

I have a few garlic cloves that sprouted, and I'd like to plant them to see if I can get new garlic.
Do the sprouts go down (like roots), or up sticking out?

Michael,

The sprout should be planted upwards - it is the stalk and leaves of the plant. Usually one end of the garlic clove is more pointed - this end goes up. The other side usually has a bit of a flat spot this is the basal plate that the roots will grow from (and where it was attatched to the garlic head). I know that you just have a few cloves that you want to try but if you had more (and limited space) it is good to be a bit more choosy and plant mostly the nicer looking cloves and eat the rest.

I would plant them in loose garden soil two inches deep to the bottom of the clove with eight inches between them - if you were planting a lot I would go a little closer.
