I have a small bed of leeks started from seed. They never grew thick enough to use in the usual manner, but eventually many of them started developing a bulbous bottom section above the ground, looking more like a tiny pearl onion.

Is this bulb good/safe to eat and can it be used like an onion?

Any advice? This was the first time growing leeks and I've never grown onions or garlic so I don't know anything about this family.
