I haven't heard of top setting shallots, but since regular shallots multiply in the ground they are just as good as top-setting plants. Many plants in the onion family will topset on occasion, a couple of my leeks did last year.

If you prefer the greens to the bulbs, you should look into Tohono O'odham I'itoi onions. They are a shallot that divides into 30+ garlic clove sized bulbs rather than 3-8 shallot sized bulbs. That allows many green shallots to be removed from the clump while ensuring that there are still plenty to replant.

Some 'shallots' I got from home depot seem to be this onion, probably because they produce sets cheaper than real shallots.

Great to know and I will look that up. I love my top setting onions. SO EASY, but I think perhaps the top setting shallots are primarily in Europe -- perhaps anyway as I can't find any info here.
