You might be able to do it if you harvest it as baby lettuce/spinach.

I can't see any reason not to try it. Garlic can come up through some heavy mulch so it shouldn't have any problem pushing through some lettuce leaves.

Traditionally, Chinese farmers used a lot of intercropping. For example, they would grow spinach or other leafy greens down the center of a double row of garlic. Makes good use of space and suppresses weeds.
