Nope, elephant garlic is actually a leek that happens to produce a bulb which has a garlic taste. In fact, when the plants are growing, it's hard to tell them from just another normal leek.

I passed up a chance to buy some cloves of this today and am wondering if I made a mistake. Is it much use for cooking/salad/whatever? I grow regular garlic and shallots and just didn't know if this was worth tackling. My local market was offering sacks with maybe four or five cloves for $6. They were from a local organic farm so I know they weren't treated to prevent sprouting. Did I goof?

You can use them anywhere you would use regular garlic. Some what milder. Go well in a stew. Bake well. Mostly I grow them for their large size and to divert the gophers. They tend to prefer the Elephants.
