If Garlic has time to sprout in the fall it will. Not sprouting is not a bad thing, it can simply mean the clove spent it's time rooting and then temps cooled before sending up greenery.

At the same time it can also mean they were planted too deep and the greenery can't reach the surface in which case they will rot (been there done, that - twice). How long ago did you plant the garlic?

I assume the shallots are comparable, but haven't grown them myself.

If you planted the garlic 4-6 weeks before freezing temps arrived and you believe you planted deeper than 4" then you might want to go rake some soil away from the area in hopes they can sprout in the spring.

I planted the garlic around the 15th of October and we have had some cold weather but until recently, no real heavy frosts. The garlic is not deeper than 4" so I do not think that it is too deep. I cannot remember which are planted where (I am at work and not at the garden which is labeled) but the kinds I planted are Music, Georgia Crystal, Chesnock Red and Spanish Roja. I planted the same way as I did last year but cannot remember what happened last year. They all did fine in the end but could not remember if they all sent up shoots last fall or not. Either the GA Crystal or Chesnock red are mostly sending up shoots at this point. Hopefully all is well and I am just worrying needlessly. rich

Of the eight varieties I planted, not all of them are up, but I expect they will all come up sooner or later. Something has to pop out of the soil first. Ironically, the first variety to sprout was the last I planted. That was about a week after the first group of garlics.
