They'll come up again next year, just like tulips and daffodils. However, you might want to re-plant them to ensure that the spacing is optimal for their second year, the bulbils were probably planted closer than you would plant cloves for heads.

I am not 100% garlic does not rot in the ground but I guess there is a small chance. Over the years I have not harvested certain bulbs for various reasons. Always, I new bulb popped up the next year.

I am a relative newbie at growing garlic, but think I have found a good method. My experience is that garlic, if left in the ground, goes dormant in the late summer and then begins growth again in the fall; going dormant again through the winter and then back up in the spring. But from this it also grows from EACH clove that was left in the bulb, crowding the others and will re-grow with much smaller cloves on forthcoming bulbs. I have left a plant to do this on purpose to protect my "seed cloves" in the event of some failure, and when I dug up one of the many offsets found the cloves to be almost miniature compared with the large cloves on summer harvested garlic. I am sure that if these tiny cloves were divided and replanted at good spacing the resulting bulbs would be smaller upon harvest, but if the LARGEST of the cloves from that harvest were replanted, I would be back to regular sized bulbs the following season. I haven't tried it, but believe it. What say you, pro garlic growers? What would be your experience?
