Not for me. Containers dry out faster in warmer temps. I need deeper soil, not shallower.

My first year WS I believed I missed the part about the soil needing to be 3" deep. All my jugs only had 2" - 2.5" in them. I never had a problem with my jugs drying out though we did have a lot of rain last spring. All 6 of my jugs germinated - like I said it was my 1st year. I am definitely a girl from the "show-me-state". I wanted to make sure it worked before investing a lot of time and energy.

Better safe than sorry. But, try everything and experiment.

I have 222 containers out there and the only ones driving me buggy are the half dozen that somehow have too shallow soil!! I had a friend helping me prep containers one day and she enjoyed "working with the mud" to put it in the containers, but these few received too little soil.

So when I go out to enjoy my sprouts and I pick these up to check for life - they are weightless and dry. And not germinating because they are dry. So I stick them in the water tray I keep out there to bottom water and they get moist, then the next day they are DRY.

Do yourself a big favor - - put in the 3 inches (min) of soil!!! You'll be happy, the sprouts will be happier!

You know, there are as many different answers as there are climates, and I think the "how deep" question really comes down to that, and also how large your ventilation holes are. If it's dry and windy where you are, then maybe you shouldn't do the shallower soil. However, here in Colorado, we have a VERY low relative humidity (even when it's raining, it seems...???), and my containers stay nice and steamy because I don't over vent--in fact, I have probably risked cooking my seeds in the Colorado sun because the vents are smaller. Do a couple of these bowls as a sampler and then you'll know. TRY EVERYTHING, and take notes!
