What a different year!!

Just amazing! With the warmer weather earlier in the season, so many things sprouted and I have a high percentage of green containers. Never have I considered planting things in the gardens at this time, be it either plants or sprouts, but today I planted Bachelor Buttons, Poppies, Cup Plants, and Monardas.

Transplanting and dividing is going on like no tomorrow and the Dahlia tubers will be going in the ground in the next week if I have time. I'm also starting to pot up things for my annual plant sale. Finally trimmed 2 Clematis and found some rooted stems to give to friends. That was a surprise!!

DH moved 5 blueberry bushes into the perennial beds today and considered mowing the lawn. WOW!

Could this be the ideal gardening year? Please say YES!

Yes! (Sorta)...We had crazy warm weather over spring break, then again at Easter, and a lot of my bottles sprouted. It's been a lot cooler since, and my sprouts seem to have gone into a lull.

Still waiting for true leaves on a lot of the babies. I don't know whether to take the chance and HOS them now, or wait till they get past the baby leaf stage.
Still having light frosts in the morning...what to do, what to do..

This is only my second spring in NH, and before that we were in Georgia. I must say I picked the ideal year to begin winter sowing. Last year winter lasted till the first week of July. I wore wool sweaters all June, and during the kids' swim lessons in July at the lake, which hadn't warmed up at all during the cold June, they served hot chocolate to all the blue-lipped kids. I'm sure WS last year was a different experience. This year is fantastic! I'm so excited, I have things popping out early, I've put them in the ground way too early, and they are ALL living. I haven't lost anything to frost at all! (Knock on wood.)

It's all very exciting and fun! Tomorrow we're putting the squash seedlings in the garden. Squash is not an April job, but who can help it this year?!

P.S. I put a Dahlia tuber in the ground last week. I have no idea if I did it right. I don't even know if it survived the winter with my primitive storing job (will a towel in the basement serve as winter storage?). I hope it grows.

    Wendy,
Lots of my sprouts have developed their first set of true leaves including some Lupines which I sowed which were marked Red Lupines. Could they be your's? Sometimes I sow only parts of a packet and find the rest in following years. I'm letting those grow on a bit since the slugs love them.

We haven't had a frost here in over a week and the weather forecast is that there won't be any in the next week. :O)

    Deanna,
When I put my tubers in the basement, they go in a box on the floor uncovered. I used to fuss over them, but one year left them on the floor and forgot them. In February I checked and they were still plump and by March they had eyes. It all depends on the conditions - my basement is 5C all winter.

Last summer was dubbed the 'summer that wasn't' for our area of Canada. Cold and wet! We are due for a good one. :O)

I'm in the same boat as Wendy!
It warmed up early and now we get frosts every morning and cooler temps-but most of my jugs have sprouts! I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit more before I put things out. I need to be digging up things that need to be moved, but it's been cold and rainy on my days off and I'm a wuss about being cold and wet!!LOL!!

It's a different year all right. Not a good different, either. First, I lost a lot of already-sprouted seedlings when everything blew away in a storm. I had 6 to 8 jugs per bins, and the entire bin(s) got blown away.

I sowed annuals 3 weeks ago, and have few if any sprouts. This garden year is looking like a bust. Thank God I have a few things started under lights, and lots of coleus cuttings under lights, or I might have a naked garden this year.

Oh..Karen! How disappointing! Can't you try re-sowing some annuals? It can't be too late for them..I started mine a little too early this year, lulled by the freaky warm weather. Now it's so cold at night I doubt that they'll germinate!
I'm waiting until the first week of May to try again...

I planted out a bunch of HOS's today. All were hardy so they should be ok. I did this because we had a forecast of rain. I figured I would go inside when it rained. It still has not rained and I had to sprinkle the babies I planted out. :) I only have a few containers left!

    Don't jinx it!!!

I agree; I've been itching to put out some of my new babies, but keep saying "but this is only April still!" to myself. So I busied myself digging my raised beds in the veggie patch on Saturday instead, and starting the WS veggies for the remainder of the garden.
