thyme is doable, if it's perennial in your area. Basil is tough because it doesn't like cold. Basically, from w=what I've read, anything that reseeds successfully in your area, or is perennial in your area should also winter sow with some success in your area.

Mark-

Salsadiva, yes you can sow all of the herbs you mentioned. So far this year I have sowed Chives, Cilantro santo, Dill, Garlic Chives, Lavender, Marjoram, Oregano, Sage, Spearmint, Rosemary, Parsley, and Summer Savory. Two-thirds have already germinated. I haven't sowed the Basils or the Perilla (shiso) yet, since they are frost tender, but will probably due them in the next week or two.

Oh, and Thyme wasn't on my list above, because I wintersowed it successfully last year, and it was supposed to be hardy to my zone. It doesn't appear to be coming back though, so I went ahead and bought a couple of plants this time. I may still sow some to keep in my kitchen windowsill as a backup.

Herbs are great for wintersowing. They germinate quickly, and most of them can handle cooler temperatures, except Basil, which is why I'm holding off on it for now. In your zone, it's certainly not too late to get started on them.

Happy sowing,
Bonnie

I think you'd be safe with cilantro and sage for sure. I'm in a warmer zone, but last year I had cilantro sprout quite early and survive quite a lot of cold. Sage is a perennial, so it should be rather tough. I don't know about thyme, as this is my first year to grow it, but I do have some sprouts already. (Mine are thymus serpyllum.)

In my experience, basil is more tender. I had some basil sprouts die in an April freeze last year. I will sow mine later this year. It germinates quickly anyway.

I have had sproutage here with all four.

Thanks for all the great advice! I just sowed thyme, rosemary, savory, cilantro and alyssum. I am really excited for this summer, if the weather would just get and stay warm!
