It's been very depressing around here with all the rain and cold weather, but I had my spirits lifted when I discovered this little bright spot under my apple tree. Bleeding hearts, hosts, and forget-me-nots.

Very pretty! I love bleeding heart. It's been gray and cool here too and it is the "special spots" in my own garden like this that are keeping me going!

I love your bleeding heart. I did a jug of white and a jug of red and all I got was one litttle white seedlig start luckily for me I had bought a red one last year and it made it thu the winter.

    Very lovely...very uplifting :)

Paula, Dicentra wasn't great germination for me last year either. 2 seedlings of red/pink and none in white; only 1 seedlings survived. It's blooming right now behind my Hosta and soon to be in bloom Columbine 'Black Barlow' and 'Roman Bronze'. The plant is so small right now, but oh soooo cute. Hope the Siberian Iris received from Pitimpinai planted to the right and back will bloom this year for me too :D

    Northerner,
I know what you mean. It has been so cold here. I've been staying indoors, and it's been so cold that the heat keeps kicking on (and we only keep it at 65).
Even though it rains outside, inside, it seems like the air is very dry, so it just doesn't stay warm at all.
The sun was out today and it was nice enough to be outside with a sweatshirt on without my fingertips freezing. They said it was supposed to warm up...but I was expecting more than just 55 degrees.

Thank you so much for your kind comments, but I must apologize for the size of the photo. I don't know what happened but it was full-size in the preview. I don't think you can get the peaceful nature of the spot with such a small pic. I will try again.

That looks like such a lovely spot of bloom. I am happy to look out my window and see green again. The leaves are finally open and lawn is waiting for the first mowing of the season. We've had a few warm days this week with the gardens growing inches every day. Tulips are just finishing up and bleeding hearts and forget me nots starting to bloom also. It's such a joy to see those forget me nots each spring as they pop up here and there. The apple tree blossoms are white against the pale purple lilacs.

Only a third of my containers have germination. Late this year and expect others as night temps get warmer.

How are your tomatoes? I will plant mine out next week.

Hi Mnwsgal, so glad to hear from you. Although we had a head start in April, May has really let us down with the cold and gloom. My DH & son have done the re-seeding of the lawn and it has been cut twice so far and things are getting caught up. Today I went out and planted out for the first time: WS lettuce and Lavender Munstead. I also direct sowed pole beans, Scarlet runner beans, 3 types of cucumbers, zucchini, and bunny tail grass, so I am getting there. As for my tomatoes, my WS tomato experiment was a great success. I had 99% germination and although they are a bit shorter than my indoor, 'under-the-lights' version, they are stronger. I expect they will be planted out in a day or two. This is how they looked yesterday.

My overall germination this year has been very good. A few laggers have showed up now it's warmer and I have put them in full sun. I was especially glad to see my Datura Metel, unknown colour of Lupins, and Pulsatilla. Today I discovered one of the perennial geraniums is up, so maybe the others will come along. How about your tomatoes?

My ws tomatoes are still pretty small. The indoor tomatoes are being hardened off and brought into the garage evenings as we still have cold nights. I use the garden beds as a holding bed over the winter and today moved those plants and dug and amended the veg. beds to prepare for planting next week. Will also direct sow pole beans, and cucumers then.

The little neighbor girls helped me plant second year echinaceas and lilies.
Need to find spaces to plants lots of aquilegia.

Haven't planted out any of this year's germinated containers yet though poppies and perennial geraniums are ready and may get them planted tomorrow.

    Northerner,

Looks so nice! Someone just gave me a huge clump of pink Bleeding Hearts and whites too. Can't wait to see them grow to your plant's size. I love them when they are that big and beautiful!

Even though you may think you are lagging behind some of us, in reality you are not. My Forget-Me-Nots are just starting to bloom, my Daffs are still blooming, the Rock Cress is starting, and the Maples are just putting out their red buds. We are about a week or so behind you at this point.

Fear not! You'll be up to your elbows in gardens and bugs soon enough! :O)
