Tomato surprise

One of the toms I winter sowed for the first time was Grightmire's Pride. I had 4 sprout in a cup and I separated them one to a cup when the first true leaves appeared. Now that they are several inches tall, I can see that 2 of them are regular leaf and 2 are potato leaf. I didn't mis-label, as I potted these up by themselves to "cheat" and put them under my grow light for a while, as they were growing very slowly(most of my WS'd toms are still very small, but I started some back-ups earlier inside and didn't have any GP back-ups). And, these are the only PL plants I have growing.

I'm not complaining at all. It's fun to grow out "mystery" plants. I'll do a side-by-side planting and I'll post later on down the road with the results.

Anyone else have surprises so far?

Some of my tomato tags faded so I'll have a few surprises, too. I also had some thyme come up in my four o'clock container. I planted them on the same day and some seed must have fallen in the container by mistake.

Also planted something called perennial mix and wildflower mix. So far all I can identify is baby's breath. The rest of the ids will have to wait till they bloom.

My volunteer toms are outdoing the WS tom's that I actually took care of....

Noi, sometimes there is a 'throwback' and a PL or RL will make the opposite leaf but still have similar fruit. It's not an everyday occurrence but it does happen, the first time I saw it was with an early variety called Matina. Anyhoo, Grightmire's Pride a pink oxheart and like all oxhearts (I think) will be just yummy. I love oxhearts.

Caryl, several years back my Liz, who was then a young dog and didn't know better, went into the garden and pulled up every plant tags she could find. She presented them to me--all in a pile and chewed to shreds--she was proud that she had 'helped' Mommy and destroyed all the offending bits of plastic. I think she had seen me picking up litter in the garden and she wanted to help. I patted her head and thanked her, sigh, and every year after have made a map of the garden showing just where each tomato is planted. I make a copy and stash one on the garage wall and under my mattress ;-)

Doris, isn't that always the way it is. Ma Nature shows us every time that she is the better gardener.

Same here Doris. Where I had the compost bin last year I already have not only blooms, but tiny fruit. The squash plants are larger too. I'm waiting to see if any okra pop up out there. I haven't watered a single time and they survived with very little rain for over 4 weeks. The wintersown ones are doing fine. I think this might be the last year I have anything in the basement under lights aside from brugmansia.

Trudi, a map sounds like a good idea. If it ever dries out here maybe I'll do it. At least Liz only took the tags. Velvet pulls out the plants and digs holes. I lost a little bed of statice already this year, though I did pull two little clumps out of the pile of dirt and put in cups -- they've recovered nicely. I need to spread some pepper around I guess -- seems to deter her a bit. I really thought she'd outgrown this.

Doris, lucky you. No volunteers this year except for chinese elm which reseeded all over the second-year veggie garden. They grow really fast and were already a couple feet high and tough to get out. Funny they never reseeded till we gave them a nice patch of bare earth within 20 feet of them.

Good to know, Trudi. This will be my first oxheart...lookin' forward to it!

They're just yum, I think you'll like oxhearts a lot. They're very meaty and could be used for cooking, but they're great sliced or for Hubs I just chunk up an oxheart with a dibdab of mayo and he is very happy.
