I've grown these guys for a year and dioscoreas can take several weeks to show growth, but once they make vines, they are pretty much good to go.

I got a huge harvest of a few hundred air tubers and planted them all back in september so by around May, these guys should be taking off. I have grown them in pots before, and the tubers tend to wrap around the bottom of the pot, so I think it's best to simply grow them in loose soil, tilling the soil down to 1ft deep since they do tend to grow very deep.

I am growing them for the tuber harvests and the only hard part about growing this is that from air tuber, they will only reach about 3/4 inch in diameter the first season so it takes 2-3 seasons to get decent size harvests.

My wife talks about Nagaimo often. Would you tell me where I might get a tuber or two so I can start growing these for her?

Just type chinese yam on eBay and you can find nagaimo seeds. They can be found in other places too, but just make sure you get either dioscorea batatas or dioscorea opposita because those are the edible kinds.

The foliage has died back on mine so I might have a hard time finding them given that they grow several feet deep, but they grow pretty easily from the seeds(air tubers).
