18 x 18. Mine are hardware cloth and protrude about 4 inches above the ground with an uncut edge to discourage them from overland expeditions. The voles are really bad around. Hard to say which is worse.

Ours are 4 feet long and 12 inches high. We also use hardware cloth, not chicken wire. We use the 2nd to the smallest size, and my husband does the cutting. It is not easy on your hands even with bolt cutters.

When I say that our cages are 4 feet long, I think it is understood that it is a 4 foot strip that I then connect and is a circle when planted.

An alternative to individual baskets is to make a raised bed that is lined with hardware cloth, and plant the roses inside that bed. Then you can add and move roses willy nilly without fussing with individual baskets.

Physical exclusion is really better than trapping. Gophers are smart for one thing, and even when you do catch one, others will continually replace the ones you catch.

When I gardened in vole territory I used battery powered ultrasound gopher chasers in the rose garden. They didn't work 100%, but well enough that the roses could grow well. I replaced the batteries every 6 months. It works best where you have a lot of territory for the voles and gophers to spread out in - if they have nowhere else to go, they'll ignore the sound.

Reg, the raised bed thing is what we started to try first, then we heard a story about a gopher that got inside the raised bed, and did a great deal of destruction.

I wish I could use poison. So many people are not turned off by it, but I am. We have a creek that runs behind our house, so we will always have critters from that.
