Here comes the sun ...

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter ... and a long rainy May.

At last we have "plent of sunshine" as the Yahoo weather forecast says. DH and I are working in the vegetable garden this afternoon.

Yesterday, after surveying the many problems already started this season: horrible waxy scale crawlers on the Brussel Sprouts, slug holes in everything, weeds taking over sections, cold damage on currant tomatoes and basil seedlings, and DH and I fighting off colds ... I was just about saying "It's going to be a bad year."

Then after a hot bath I said "It's not too late to improve things in the garden."

So fingers crossed, we'll do what we can. But I am definitely going to save up for a greenhouse to buy this fall!

"Little darling..it feels like years since it's been here"! I second that emotion, to evoke another song.

What beautiful day! Planted out some store bought tomato plants because my w/s seedlings are as tall as this "Y" ..literally. My HOS seedlings haven't moved in three weeks, oh, except for the garden renewal that the squirrels do.

Little tree rats are intent on digging up every new seedling clump. I want to make a stew out of them, or something..didn't the Clampetts eat them along with 'possums'?

Wendy: Tree rats are bad enough, the thought of eating them is nauseating! So far this year, no problem with voles. They drove me nuts last year digging everything up. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I also bought some tomato plants today. I planted a few WSown ones, but they are tiny. I have 2 large containers of toms that didn't even germinate.

I'm still holding on to a few jugs of annuals which are also miniscule- coleus, angelonia, 2 jugs of celosia, gomphrena... these have sprouts, but way too small to plant yet. I'll give them another week, maybe two. If they don't grow a lot by then, they'll be compost food.

Yvonne's salvia not doing anything either. Most have 1 set of true leaves, some are just getting them. They're less than an inch tall. My volunteers are bigger.

Wendy and KQ:
Here comes the sun, and I say, it's all right.
I have some seedlings that haven't budged from the Y stage too!
We put in 4 store-bought'n tomatoes too. Two of them got put into those hanging upside down contraptions. We're experimenting with that to see if we can get heirloom tomatoes going that way in the future without V-wilt.

We also tried the HOS technique tonight to see what will happen.

SQUIRRELS! They keep digging up the cardboard boxes I am using to start gardens in weed patches.

Did you know they can live to be 25 years old! The squirrels--not the boxes!

The reason I am thinking of getting a small greenhouse--my plants are miniscule, and people are carting boxes full of blooming flowers home from the department stores. It isn't fair. I just have to get an earlier start--say maybe August!
