My one jungle

17 years ago

Here's my Hippi jungle, by a patio door in my bedroom. The dark throw on the bed is for the kitties to sun themselves in the afternoon mostly, but they sleep on it at night also.

{{gwi:386722}}

Here's Tango. It has finished now. Maybe another scape?

{{gwi:386723}}

Faro is gorgeous. Seems to be growing seed now while the next scape develops.

{{gwi:386724}}

Amalfi - A person in my art group went to Amalfi recently. She said it was the most gorgeous place she has ever visited.

{{gwi:386725}}

And look at the show Rock n Roll is putting on. This is one I wasn't all that excited about, but was I ever wrong!

{{gwi:386726}}

And what about Ragtime?!!!! As you can see, it's just getting started.

{{gwi:386727}}

And I'm in love with Carnival

{{gwi:386728}}

Emerald has mostly finished, but think there will be seed.

{{gwi:386729}}

Oh, in case there are not enough hippis in my life already, I draw them, too. Here's an unfinished one. It's finished now, but have yet to try for another picture.

{{gwi:386730}}

Thanks for visiting. More on the way.

    Dear Kitty,

    All your flowers are lovely AND I especially appreciated your drawing. I can't wait to see it completed. Just wonderful!

    You are amazing!!!!

    WOOOOW! Emerald is so dainty and pretty and that Ragtime is just going at it! Not only are your blooms gorgeous, but your drawing is incredible Kitty! You are SO talented! Are they just for you or do you number them and print them? That would be so awesome hanging on the wall! Thank you for sharing that with us!

    I don't think I've ever seen so much pollen on a Ragtime-- crazy.

    Wow, Kitty! You are certainly an accomplished artist... I wish I could draw or paint.

    Every bulb is blooming so beautifully, I hardly know where to begin with compliments! They're all wonderful!

    Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your jungle of bulbs and plants! Most awesome! :-)

    I like the pony tail palm there. I just found a pot full (9 seedlings about a centimeter or two in diameter each) at Lowes for $2.64 for all nine. The join my 30 + year old and my 6 junior palms and go very nicely with the hippeastrums. The go outside in the summer with them too. They also love the summer sun and that keeps them compact and full. A great companion plant to hippis and they need so little care. Repot every 4-5 years if they need it.

    They have pots of little baby ponytail palms here at our Lowe's, too! I was thinking about getting some, but I already have a nice one... and I'd rather save the space for a bulb! The nice thing about the little pots of babies is that they look sort of "bonsai" in nature, all huddled together in their small pots! The ones I saw were in either 3" or 4" pots, and they were only a few dollars per pot. They also had other small houseplant types, such as parlor palms and mother-in-law's-tongue, just to name a couple.

    Kitty, yours looks quite large and tree-like! Mine is still small enough to be a hanging basket plant, but it's getting there! I love how easy they are to care for! They do make nice bulb companions!

    My pony tail palms were my mom's. I don't remember now how large they were when I got them, but she's been gone for about 19 years now. I repot them when they break the pots. They are about five feet tall. The one in the original (above) picture was just repotted about a month ago because the pot had split in 3 or 4 places.

    I do have a little one with several bulbs(s), but I'd like to keep it small for awhile. And I agree, they do complement the bulbs.

    BTW, this has been by a north-facing door in the diningroom since about October. They are not a fussy plant. Mine seem to do best in partial shade when outside.

    Oh, and I neglected to thank you for the appreciation of my art-work. I mostly do watercolor paintings, but not the type where the colors run together. I like things to look real. I first did a little bit of pen and ink in HS. I won't tell you how long ago that was (but we just had our 55th reunion - ha! ha!). I picked it up again a year or so back. One of the reasons I like it is that I don't have to get out the pallet, get a container of water, and find a place to spread it all out. I was lucky to get into a group of artists led by a wonderful instructor who was self-taught like me.

    I know you can't see much from this, but at least perhaps get an idea of the type of stuff I do.
    {{gwi:386732}}

    And one more
    {{gwi:386733}}

    I have pictures all over because there's almost no wall space in my house. I have loads of windows, plus five patio or French doors. I like the greenhouse effect, so when I remodel a room, in go more windows and possibly a door. Thanks for looking.

    Haiti, that was an excellent price for 9 baby palms. It's so hard to resist them. They used to be very hard to find. When you get a chance, can you post some pictures of your palms and bulbs?

  • 17 years ago

    Beautiful paintings and drawings Kitty. Magnificent.
    I will try to get some pics of the palms. Also the 2 foot across one that is 12 feet + tall (my over 30 year old one).
    It has branched out now so there isn't just a long, tall trunk anymore. At Huntington Gardens in LA there is a huge forest of them, many with a great many stalks. Very impressive plants.

    All I can say is WOW!! Kitty I am so impressed. First your room is so tidy! As I said...sadly my housework is taking a backseat to work and also the Hippis!
    And...you are so talented with your drawings and paintings. I love your watercolors. They are vibrant!! (LIKE YOU!!!).

    Have a great weekend!

    WOW! Haiti, you have a place indoors to house a 12-foot palm? I'm impressed. I have a number of them, even a Sago that is growing too much, since you can't get near those as they get larger. Then a couple of those with the two-inch thorns that I've forgotten the names of, plus several others, some the worse for wear. Looking forward to your pictures. My downfall, though are the Norfolk Island pines. Just can't leave them. What do we call CHAD for Norfolks????? One is over thirty years old. I've been cutting the tops because there's no place for them. Then they branch out like crazy,

    Oh my gosh, Kitty... I am awestruck! Your artistic ability is... well, I'm speechless! I am not worthy! I am not worthy!

    You are a fantastic artist! I am so envious of your talent! I've always wanted so badly to draw and paint, but I can't make what I see in my mind come out my hand and onto canvas or paper!

    I hope you have your artwork in galleries, because you are an incredibly talented artist! I didn't realize how good you were! I'm awestruck! I'm absolutely awestruck! :-)
