First Seed Harvest

For me, it's the perennial alyssum. I have had these plants for years, transplanted self-sown babies, and sown some. This year, I only have a few left. I'm thinking the majority is due to age of the plants, but also the weather.

Anyway, I went out and found that most seed had already dropped. I gathered them up as they were on the sidewalk and shook some more loose. Bottom line is that I won't have nearly the harvest as in the past.

I'm thinking about summer sowing some and then just giving away a few packs. I like my seed packs as full as possible, so this means fewer seeds to the noobs. I'm going to scale down my seed project and not accept donations this next year as I have other projects that need tending to. Rats.

My columbines bloomed somewhat following our freeze and were basically short and with few blooms. I will not be harvesting any for giveaways and will let these self sow.

So, first out of the shoot is disappointing. I hope things will pick up a bit. The 90 degree temps continue with a drought.

Anyone else have some early reports?

Dianthus, aquilegia, batchelor buttons, california poppies and some sort of sweet pea like vine that is perennial here but does not have a scent. It's not regular perennial pea, it's cool!

I gathered seeds from sweet williams, pinks, yesterday. My alyssum did not come back.I sowed some seeds direct but they have not come up either.I guess this heat is doing this.I am going to sow some in containers to see if I can get some to grow.I am so late on doing my spring sowing.I did sow alot back in March that need planting out.I just took for granted my alyssum would return-o well, will sow some tomorrow. We need rain here.My columbine will be ready in a few days but I am only going to collect from a few long spur ones.Maybe some dark purple ones.

Not yet! Most stuff just barely coming to bloom here - only thing starting to show seed pods is arabis.

I've harvested Anemone sylvestris, Delphinium tricorne, Virginia Bluebells (Sharon, if you're reading this I owe you!) and Celandine Poppy, missed the Puschkinia and Scilla siberica as usual. My Columbines are doing about the same as Bakemom's and so far the Alliums have been a bust - I moved them last fall so I guess they need to recuperate.

I WS'ed Silene orientalis last year and it has bloomed - quite nice! But the seedheads don't look all that appealing and it's right beside my Lavender which is just starting to bloom now. I don't want to deadhead, so I guess that one will get moved in the fall!

All in all I suppose it's about the same as usual - too many seeds and too little time to trade them all away. Too bad you won't be doing the nooB packs this year, I have a bunch of stuff that needs homes.

Let me know if you find a willing vic, er, replacement to send out seeds. :)

I collected some from an unknowner. I think its a perennial bachelor button. I need to take a photo of & get some help. Nothing else to take yet. Things are really just starting to bloom.

I'm the world's worst at seed collecting. I find it a monotonous chore. I have pods forming now on columbine and digitalis. I'll try to force myself.

And I don't know why I can't figure out Petunia seeds. I posted a few weeks ago & Trudi told me where to look. I also looked at the seed site but I still can't figure it out. Its making me feel very stupid because I sense their right there & I'm missing something.

I will be doing some noob packs, but just not on the vast scale we did this year with more than 2000 packs of seeds going to nearly 200 noobs.

Someone will likely step and and organize something. I just need to scale back due to work etc.

There's only 2 seeds I'm definately collecting this year. The first will be Aurinia saxatilis, which I'm watching right now.

The other is this gorgeous Aquilegia:

It's Aquilegia caerulea, Rocky Mountain Columbine. I got the seeds in a trade, and grew them out in 2005. I only got two cells with germination, and planted them out in the fall. Last year, I got just a couple of blooms, but this year it's putting on quite a show. It's got clusters of blooms low on the plants, and then these high-flying ghost like blossoms towering above the others.

    It's my new favorite Columbine.

Donn those are beautiful. They look like angels to me.

Gorgeous, Donn. May I have some seeds of that? :-P Love the color & tails. :-)

I collected Fritillaria meleagris seeds today. I sowed some this winter. Not a one germinated. To those who received seeds from me last fall, I am sorry. Should I wait and see if they'll germinate later or should I just dump the containers?

Since last fall was my first season to 'snatch', I didn't even think to do it in the spring or summer. I was checking out my wildflower patch and discovered Scarlet Flax seed pods and did a little woohoo dance since I love that plant/flower.
