Now what do you mean by a sport? I know what a sport from an evergreen plant is.. but from a bulb? Is it an offset that just bloomed differently from the original mother bulb?

Is that the same beautiful bulb that Emarillys had at the top of his page on his older website?

When I asked he described it as a sport-- I assume you are right, an offset that bloomed differently.

Yep, a sport is a naturally occurring (unexpected) variation!
It could occur as an offset, but wonder if the term sport would be used if the same happened as a result of tissue culture or other vegetative propagation.

I'm fairly sure if there is an aberration due to tissue culture it is not referred to as a sport. It is a variant or aberration or variation. This is quite common in kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) that have been propagated by tissue culture. In some cases the resulting plants can be better and prettier than the original. We have one plant in particular and in this case each year about 80% of the flowers on this particular plant have a much wider white band and one or two branches bloom true. Of course I'm not an expert so if someone know better please tell...

I believe that Komoriya produces most of their bulbs via tissue culture and that may be why so many of their bulbs don't seem to match up to their pictures!

Earlier this year my pot of Giraffes was rotting but I caught them just in time. I have recently replanted them, all 13 offsets and they seem to be rooting, most of them at least so, now I can dream that maybe one of them will give me a flower like your Okapi!!

The second flower opened much more like I was expecting. All the tips are twisted.

That's a real beauty Mike, lets hope that like Giraffe it loves to produce offsets!!

Very, very nice Mike. Love the twisted tips. Like Donna, hoping you get lots of offsets.
Also re tissue culture, if I remember correctly, sports can be induced chemically and by irradiation besides naturally occurring mutations. Of course I could be totally wrong :) - J
