Rhododendron nakaharae is very low, creeping or almost creeping. Find hybrids that inherit this nakaharae characteristic.

Thanks, and here is an example of my problem. Internet research turns up: "This species likes sun or part shade with a preference for the sun; it may fail to set flower buds if planted in too deep a shade."

Experience has taught me to be very careful with the information I obtain with my internet searches. Incorrect names, photographs, cultivation information... it's all out there.
Some reputable sources of information are: American Rhododendron Society, Azalea Society of America, Rare Find Nursery, Greer Gardens.
You should do well with these sites, and they will point you elsewhere for valuable information, for example to Don Hyatt.
I have less troubles with evergreen azaleas in shadier locations than I have had with other rhododendrons. They may bloom a little less, but still put on a good show.

With morning sun you should be OK. I have azaleas with one to two hours of morning sun, rest of the day shade, and they never fail to flower well each spring.

I went to a local nursery and bought three AZALEA 'HIGASA' PINK, which seem to match what I'm looking for.

Here's a picture of one of my Nakaharae that is at least 30 years old. It has stayed rather low even though some sprouts are a bit vigorous and semi-vertical. I have not pruned it for starts or tidyness.

The fern is a bit of a tolerable weed here called Lady fern, Athyrium filex-femina. They turn brown and die back in the winter. That's when I dig them out. It can be a hard job if left to grow among the rocks for more than a year.
