Question about ws a large container

I have a huge pot of beautiful petunias. If I would like to have this pot full of something else next year can I ws directly into it? I would cover it with a clear plastic drop cloth, tape it up and make holes in it. Would this work or should I just ws individual little containers of whatever I decide on and transplant them into the large one? Thanks for any suggestions.

If it's a huge pot you can leave it exposed becausr the depth and volume of the soil will hold a considerable amount of water and won't dry out quickly. You can have some windblown weed seeds in it if it is exposed, but if you know your ;local weeds you can quickly ID them. Also, if you do or don't expose it, I would still recommend that you remove the top four inches of soil and replace it with new potting soil.
