Probably not....Lupine up here only blooms once a year and goes fairly dormant for the rest of the year. If the hort. types re-bloom I would think letting them go to seed first (like most plants) will take a big burst of energy to rebloom.

You have to deadhead before they go to seed. They will give you a second but smaller bloom. If you let them go to seed they won't bloom again.

I intended to cut the flowerheads back and get a second blossom. However, when the plant is still blossoming at the top, the seeds are fully set on the bottom of the spike. I ended up just leaving them because the seeds were so far along by the time the plant stopped blossoming.

The seed pods are brown now and starting to open. However, I keep missing the seeds. I keep reading a lot of conflicting information about collecting the seeds. Some places say that the pods even explode open. I would like to cut off the spike now instead of bagging, but who knows!

You don't have to cut the whole spike off. Just nip some of the ripened pods off and place in a paper bag in a warm dry place. I drive the cats crazy by placing my bags on top of the TV or the fridge or on window sills. :O)

Sometimes each stem acts like it's own plant too so if you want seeds, let a few of them go to seed and just trim the others. You should get a flush out of the ones you trim.

Thanks. I went out and cut the spikes off and just kept the pods that were black looking. We will see if they reflower or not. I hope so! The garden looks a lot better now!!! There were long pod spikes hanging all over the place.

Evonnestoryteller, I have The Chatelaine and Lu Lu lupines. Both of them re-flower after I cut the older bloomstalks off. The tops will still have flowers and buds to open but I want the second bloom (happening now). They are smaller but just as sweet. I have never seen the wild lupines do this but I have never seen the wild lupines get cut back.
