Upright junipers for the valley

Has anyone tried Juniper scopulorum or J. virginiana with success in the valley? I'd like an upright smallish conifer like these for the corner of my house. Not sure if they can tolerate our heat.

My other choices are Italian Cypress, but I'd need to trim it constantly b/c I don't want a tall plant. Arizona cypress would probably work also, but I don't want the blue variety.

#1 is about 13 years old and has gotten lots of water.
#2 is about 6 or 7 years old, has been abused and gets little water.
#3 is about 5 years old and gets lots of water.
#4 is actually an arborvitae about 3or 4 years old, doesn't get much water. At my last house we had arborvitaes for 25 yrs that got to about 12'. I like them.
I don't know what variety any of these are. I just bought whatever vertical they had. I got them from SummerWinds.
I had a couple of cypress that were in a neglected side yard. Spider mites killed one, the other got too big and I cut it down.
