Figs

I have planted a Kadota Fig tree in my backyard. I bought it as a 5 gallon and it seems to be doing well despite my puppy breaking off some of the tender new branches. Here are my questions:

I have about 10-12 branches left that have leaves on them. Is this normal for a fig tree to have so few branches?

I am thinking about adding another fig tree right next to this one. Has anyone had problems with doing that? (ie crowding/ fighting for nutrients)

What are some good companion plans to go under the fig tree?

Thanks!
