I think they will tolerate some shade but that sounds like too much. you may need to do a container but it would need to be a pretty large one because these can grow fast.

It will do fine with 1-2 hours direct sunlight but it won't get very large. I had one in the ground like that last year and it grew to about 5 ft while the others with more sunlight grew to about 8-9 ft.

I have mine planted in the ground since late April in the sun by I am not seeing much growth in the trunk. It is growing a new leaf each week but not getting much taller. Do you have any idea why it is not growing taller?

Hey gageagranny. I had a basjoo that i got two years ago that did the same thing. It would get a new leaf every week but not get any taller at all. So i finally got a new one and now that one is going crazy! As for the first one, sure enough there wasnt enough corm on it to produce roots or to make it get bigger.

The leaves on a banana are the trunk so if its making new leaves it will get taller. It could be that the basjoo just needs to establish a better root system or has been in shock from shipping. I have offsets from my basjoo that has not ground as much as I would have liked the first year. My Siam Ruby and Musa Sikkimensis are only about 3' tall right now. Just make sure that you are feeding the basjoo, I use a high nitrogen fert. and plenty of water. It's still alive don't give up on.
