I always mix fertilizer into the soil.

It should be mixed into the soil. I have found that it will mold when just laying on top. Once flies even laid eggs in the milorg after we had a lot of rain and the maggots burrowed into the bananas. So from then on I mixed it into the soil and havent had any problems. I only use milorg on my nonedible/decorative bananas even though it is supposed to be safe for edibles- just a personal choice.

Personally I did not have good luck using Milorganite. I was so excited after reading about it on here, so I mixed it in with everything I planted. I also dug holes around my bananas and filled the holes with it. I was disappointed with the results. I went back to the using fish emulsion. Also, the milorgranite odor lasts alot longer than fish emulsion. That is really important because most of my plants are around my pool. Maybe I used it wrong or used too much I don't know. Never used it, but I've heard from several people that Milorganite stinks to high heaven once it gets wet.
