Hi, I live just north of Salt Lake City, Utah and I would assume our winters are pretty similar. I have overwintered my musa basjoo for two winters now by cutting it down to about 12 inches tall and then placing lawn bags full of leaves or straw in a circle around the plant and then filling the center between the bags and plant with more leaves. Then I cover it with a tarp to keep it dry. This method provides a lot of protection against the freezing weather we get. I cut the bananas down after we have had a light frost sometime in Oct. In the spring when I uncover it they are already starting to sprout new leaves.

I would plant the ones in the pots in the ground now so they have time to get established before it gets cold.
