help identify bees

vancleaveterry

Hello... I have three large colonies of bees that I can't identify. They nest underground in large colonies covering around 200 sqr feet, with hundreds and hundreds of entrance burrows.

They are not yellow jackets or hornets. In fact they are very non-aggresive, you can walk right through their colony, even drive a tractor through. But the massive mount of bees hovering and buzzing 6" or so above the ground is very intimidating.

They look very much like honey bees, except their abdomen is a little longer and blacker. They are not fat like bumblebees.

I live 20 miles north of the beach in Mississippi.

Thanks!
