A. cerana in the west?

I've been reading a lot lately, and I'm curious if there have been western attempts at keeping the asian bee. It's not as big a honey producer, but it survives the mites devastating Italian-derived on its own in the wild. That and a docile demeanor could seemingly be very attractive to the hobby apiarist.

Would they interbreed with the Italian-derived ones, and would that be a problem?

Are there sources for them in the US?

Are their needs any different?

All I've been able to find on the subject is that there is or at least was a guy in New England trying to crossbreed them with the Italian bees to improve their honey production.

Otherwise I've got nothing, which I why I asked.
