Yes, I've heard of this. I think when the topic first came to light, I recall the guy was apparently a full-time employed carpenter at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (the White House - as first named by Teddy Roosevelt). If memory serves me correctly, he caught a swarm on the White House grounds and asked if the first family wanted a beehive (I suppose for pollination purposes) to go along with the vegetable garden that was being planted at the time.
