I read that it is better to keep the pup attached to the corm when you overwinter it. Separate it next year.

As for leaving it outside, with mulch; that would depend on the variety.

Lift them out of the ground and protect in a frost free position until next Spring. They are very easy to lift out of the ground (even big ones). I do the same even with the so called hardy ones (basjoo and others). You can cut off all or some of the leaves and some or most of the trunk after you dig them out. Keep on the drier side over the winter.

I have a couple questions about this and I'm hoping someone will see them here so I don't have to start another thread about this.
My Musa Bajoo is one year old and probably about six feet tall. I have read about putting mulch around it, etc. I tried that last year and it turned to mush. (A different plant.) But, I didn't put a tarp over it, so maybe that's why.
Anyway, I'm thinking now maybe I'll dig this one up. Everyone seems to say they're easy to get up. But, what do I do with it? Be specific. haha. Plant it in a container with some potting soil? Store it in my outside shed where it is cold? Put it in the basement and forget about it? (Including no water?) Put it in my sunroom where it is very chilly in the winter (about 40 degrees) and treat it like a houseplant?
