Yellowjackets are wasps.

That's a very good photo Konrad! I have seen wasp nests in the ground before, but never one quite like that!

Terry, ..same here, it was the first time seeing this, taking pictures I was literally a couple of inches away and was not threatening their home, ...I was fine.

With our warm fall dry weather, these guy's grew in larger numbers that I had way too many for my likings because they were robbing some of my honey bee hives. I then went out and took revenge,...just two day's ago, giving them a shot of wasp killer, I knew there was another hole somewhere in the ground but couldn't locate it right away, I was close and started to poke around when I hit their home, oh man, they sure came in a hurry and I got nailed twice, in my little finger and one in the arm right through the heavy sweat shirt, got swollen up pretty good.
I must say, 5 honey bee stings don't hurt as bad as one of these.

Perhaps it helped a little getting rid of some, there are allot of homes around one doesn't see.
