outside hippies

I just uncovered the hippies I planted out in the raised cement block bed for the summer. THey look better then I thought they would! most had some leaves, and Sweet Lillian is pushing out a bud! Oh wonderful! She did not bloom for me this winter so now I get to see her face! I am going to leave the fabric cover off now, since I see no bad bugs of any kind, not even aphids bothering my plants. This will allow me to pay more attention to watering and see if I can beef these babies up!

What a wonderful day it has been! It is just hitting 80 degrees now on a wonderful day with dry air. We decided to skip our local festival (We've been here 34 years and now occassionally do this. DH and I went to work out in the orchard this morning to rectify his neglact while he was away on business trips and I Am feeling so encouraged (And much less stressed, LOL) We gave the orchard a summer pruning, cutting off the lowest branches that impede his getting close to them on the mower, dug the blueberries out of the buttercup and plum sprouts, dug out the stump of a sick asian pear we cut down a couple of years ago, and a buddleia that was an icky mauve pink and took up far too much space and sunshine. That was before lunch, LOL. Now I think DH is about to start the mower and mow up close around all the fruiting plants and my roses that he left awash in buttercups. He still has to rescue the raspberries too, then we will get a sprinkler in on the poor things.

I am so on a roll! Even though my hands and muscles are sooo sore, days like this do not come too often here and especially not on weekends! So after lunch I went out and watered the veggies garden then cleared away all the wild blackberries and other things trying to grow through the fence on top of my hippi "Summer cottage", so I could uncover it. I have given it a good soaking (It will drain fast). Now its a quarter to six and I think I am done for the day, whew! Miss Josie puppy is laid out so exhausted! She helped me all day, LOL. What fun to have a puppy child keeping me company while I worked!

I am going to be sooooo sore tomorrow!

As I read of your wonderful day, Lizalily, my first thought was - Boy, are you gonna love Sweet Lilian! Wait until that bud opens... you are just gonna love the color!

It sounds like you had a very exhausting day, but a day of hard work in the garden/yard is better than any other work I can think of! It's honest work and honest sweat, and the rewards of that work are beyond anything you can earn working for someone else!

We took a shopping and flea-marketing day yesterday... it rained all day! We got a total of 7 inches of rain! We are already quite saturated, so we really didn't need it. As I look out the window today, the sun is shining and the trees are dancing in a nice breeze... I just hope the humidity isn't too high! I'd like to spend the day working in the gardens, as you did yesterday!

YOu could send about half of that rain our way, Jodi! We get almost no rain from mid June until sometime in Sept-Oct. Shuffling hoses gets real old! We are just finally warming up from the low 60s into the the high 70's now that La Nina is moving on.

Yes, I have some real sore muscles today, but the sense of accomplisment stays on!

I better take my camera out and start tracking Sweet Lillian today!

Yesterday, the rain held off and I was finally able to get some outside work accomplished... I mowed a bit of grass, did some trim work... and re-potted a few plants that desperately needed it! I finally got my Plumeria cutting into a larger pot... it was doing fine in the small one it was in, but it's much happier with room to spread out!

As I was re-potting some things, I realized that I have been able to successfully keep all 6 of my orchids alive, and most are putting out new growth! I still have some bulbs to re-pot, but most of those are growing well, too!

The cocoa colored rose is opening another bud, the miniature roses are going nuts, and I have some green Glads getting ready to open! The Lilies are about done for the season, but there is Phlox opening, Mums are budding, and several other flowers are just blooming away... like the Gaillardia, that won't quit! Daylilies are blooming left and right in several nice colors, and I know there will be others flowers coming soon.

I bumped up some climbing roses that were in small pots, and those will be planted in the garden soon... I also weeded some areas that needed it... it was a rather productive day, all in all.

Today, we make the 3 1/2 hour trek north to see the doctor... just for check-ups, and to get prescriptions re-written... nothing special, but it's a trip that needs to be made every few months... I'm hoping to get home early so I can get outside and do a bit more weeding behind the garage. That bed is getting out of hand!

It never ends... you get one area weeded, and another area mocks you with more weeds! Keeping large gardens is a lot of work, but I love it!

I'm also in the process of collecting seed from those perennials that are giving it... I want to get some prepared and packaged to send out to some folks... I've got some for you, too, Lizalily! I'm just hoping the weather cooperates and it dries up a bit, so I can gather the seed and get it dried for shipment!

Well... it's a long drive... and I still need to intake more coffee! Have a wonderful day!
