Sedum and bees

My neighbor has a few hives and the bees are in my yard constantly. Here they are on sedum Autumn Joy a few days ago. The honey which Eric the beekeeper shares with us is yummy. Jim

Having many different plants blooming at the same time is the perfect situation for bees. Different plants will produce their nectar and pollen at different rates depending on the weather--sunlight, temperature, humidity, wind, etc. Today, the sedum are in high production mode, so the bees are flocking there. Tomorrow, it might be the perennial sunflowers. Though, there isn't much still around these days. So, anything you can find that is still blooming will be wonderful. I have also found that Autumn Joy Sedum are very popular with the bees. Also, it is so easy to propagate by splitting every year or so. Before you know it, you can have a patch of sedum in every corner.

Holy honeybee. I gotta get me some Sedum. I've been looking for a good plant to plant for my bees. This looks like the ticket. Thanks for sharing.

Well, at least in my yard, some sedums are more attractive to bees than others, and this is without a nearby bee keeper.

Jean, in the pictures above, the bees are obviously loving the red Sedums. Might it be that some of your sedums are more or less attractive to the bees due to color, or some other factor? I'd hate to plant the wrong kind and have them ignored by the bees!

Sedums seem to go through a shifting color scheme. The sedums are noticeably darker today than they were last week when these pictures were taken. I'll check on bee activity tommorrow and report back. Jim

I have over a dozen stonecrop plants and look forward to the many, many bees they attract every year. In September usually. Unbelievable. They even quietly rest on the plants at night.

Autumn Joy Sedum has been on my "must plant" list for a while. Maybe next year I'll get to it. The girls do love it, and I believe that it blooms until frost.
