Well a lot of plants are adapted to grow only in wetland like situations. If you like those sort of plants or have a boggy place on your property there are some really lovely ones. Lilies, irises, hostas, reeds, sedges, etc. etc. It will also increase your habitat diversity & you will get more critters visiting. Swallows & robins like to collect mud for their nests at bog gardens & ponds.

If you have a bit of open water you will get dragon flies & other cool insects with aquatic life stages & birds will come to bathe. You might even get racoons coming in to feel about for whatever they can find to eat.

If you have open water it is not a bad idea to throw in some mosquito fish since its a perfect breeding area for the little blood suckers.

Also, if a bog is attached to a pond, it does a very good job of filtering the water and keeping it free of algae. But I think most people have bogs because they just love the plants that can only be grown in bogs, like Sarracenia.

If your bog is a true bog, meaning an area of
always soggy soil, the bog filters water back
into the water table.
Wetlands and bogs are important parts of our
ecosystem and are disappearing more than I'd
like.
I have a pond and a bog and the bog is my favorite.
