begonias with caudexes are semi-tuberous, i believe. i've killed both my B. partita and B. suffruticosa, so maybe i'm not the right one to be giving care instructions! doing a quick search, here is a link at bottom to tuberous care from the ABS page.

I'm not sure tuberous care would be the same as semi-tuberous care (should have checked the link, Ming, but I don't like to think about tuberous begonias 'cause they won't grow here. Semi-tuberous do.) I have had mixed success with them, but usually when I've lost them it's been from a lapse of care rather than the climate. Last year I had two about the same size, so I decided to experiment. One stayed outside under a frost blanket. One came in under fluorescent lights. I uncovered the one outside this week and it has about doubled in size (still not real big) and looks good. The one inside has started to bloom and is bushier, but I've had trouble with it getting spots on the leaves I took to be fungus and have been spraying with Lysol, which has slowed down but not stopped the heavy loss of foliage. They are both in the same mix, which is a quick-draining blend I use for wick-watering. We've had a lot of rain this winter so I know the one outside never dried out, and while I try to let the reservoir under things like this I think need partial drying, I don't think it ever got very dry. In the past if I let them get very dry at all they reacted very badly, which surprised me as I would think they grow a caudex as a storage unit to tide them over when it's dry. Mine are too young to have much of one yet--we'll see! Just for the record: I was given it without a name, and the whole partita etc. complex has been debated and re-named until my head swims, and I'm not sure what it is. Not quite like the partita I had before.
