Bog Garden Question

Hello-

A large part of my yard is constantly wet or soft and the soil itself is stinky and gray. Will bog plants grow in this or will I need to ammend the soil in some way or can I just go get some plants and stick them in the ground? Also, we want to direct the water in our yard to a specific area-which will hopefully become the bog garden-but what happens if there is too much water for a time? Will the plants die or rot? Will it become a mosquito breeding ground or can I use BT donuts? Any adivce would be aprreciated.

There are a lot of bog plants that would do very well in a wet yard. I would try the larger ones such as broadleaf or narrow leaf cattail and bullrushes. These plants can survive in just damp soil and in deeper water too if your area fluxuates during the year.

Most bog plants do not need any special type of soil to grow in so you don't need to change your soil.

If you have standing water, then mosquitos could be a problem, but BT donuts will control them fine.

This is my marsh garden which has cattails and arrow head in it. There are also some other types of bog plants.

Just be careful where you put cattails in your yard. They can be extremely invasive!
