Cut the basil plate with some parts of the scale (above the basil plate about 5 mm.) with some root. This will include the scale base that has the many axils and then plant it the same way you do bulb cutting.

You may use fungicide and then plant the piece. The mother bulbs still can be plant and give flowers the next season.

Thank you for this very useful information. I will try this next time I have a bulb with an overgrown basal plate that needs trimming. Does he have any other details to share about this approach? It would be helpful to know how much time it took to develop bulblets and whether he starts with a dormant bulb.

Hi Bill,

It only takes 13 days. My friend cut the basil plate when the bulb is in growing stage.
