I seem to have read that a virus infection has altered the genetic pattern of Cornus florida so red is now expressed instead of white. Almost any good text on genetics will probably offer good information. Also, I understand that grafting a red Dogwood scion onto a white stock will infect the recipient so that entire tree will eventually become red.
