Came across this with the same question, and was able to find the answer. I believe it was a Crenshaw Melon!

13 years later, I doubt the OP cares any more but a Crenshaw looks nothing like a watermelon. They are oblong (not rounded) in shape with a pointy end and with a pale green or yellow rind. No mistaking for any sort of watermelon unless you had never seen one before!
