Full StoryThere is an item in today's news that nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) production in the "Isle of Spice" is down because the farmers there had planted too many male trees after hurricane Ivan in 2004.
"Dioeciousness" in horticulture is a minor inconvenience or disappointment when it works against our plans; but in agriculture, it is an altogether 'different kettle of cultivars'. Please pardon the mixed metaphor but note the alliterative ring.
Imagine the Grenadian farmer who has been nurturing his nutmeg tree(s) since 2004 (land, labor and money) only to find out, now, that the plant will not produce. (S)he now has to start all over again.
