I am envious. I have some questions about your experience growing them out in 8b. Being on the very edge of 7b/8a, I was hoping to be more adventurous with leaving some of mine out this winter. I presume you bury your bulbs. Do you leave them buried year round or do you cover them only in winter? I have a bunch that I planted in the ground in the spring with their bulbs exposed and I am considering just covering them with a thick layer of bagged garden soil, which would be easy to remove next spring. And is it the frost that seems to kill the cybisters, or do you think they rot from the combined cold and moisture?

I will be moving within California, so no worries about any regulations due to driving over state lines. I wouldn't claim to be the most successful grower of amaryllis. Due to leaving them out during very cold spells, many of them turned mushy. I did not bury my bulbs and instead left them outside in pots during the winter. More than half of my bulbs didn't fare so well. I think they would probably do fine if they were covered with leaves, straw or mulch. -Tina

Duh... Why did I think you were heading to FL!? Are you heading down towards LA/OC/SD?? I lived in OC for 23 years. Friends down there have loads of hippis in the yard. Yay for you!!
