which red?

Hey all --

I'm ordering bulbs (yes, I know, I'm late) and I'd like to get one or two red amaryllis for my mom. I tend to like the patterns better, but her faves are great big reds.

So -- the places I'm ordering from have the following that look good to me:

Royal Velvet
Ferrari
Benfica
Red Pearl
Black Pearl
Floris Hecker
Merry Christmas
Red Lion

Anybody got preferences? I might buy two different reds -- for instance, if there's a great bright red and a great dark red.

Hi! You can get Red Lion and Merry Christmas at a good garden center... So I wouldn't pay a premium price through a catalog. Royal Velvet is a rich, large, dark red. Red Pearl is a nice moderate sized red. Benefica and Black Pearl are two of the darkest reds you can find. Look at Ferrari and Floris Hecker and see if you think your mother would like those. It's a good place to start!

Right now I'm thinking Royal Velvet and Floris Hecker (I've been reading about how floriferous Floris is).

Wow!! You dove in with both feet!! I'm glad you're keeping Ruby Star for yourself, a favorite of everyone! You've got some bright and colorful varieties there so enjoy yourself when they bloom! Please be sure to share pictures here on the forum when they do, we all love to see everyone's flowers!!

It's not as bad as it sounds. I was already planning to buy some for Mom and myself, so really only the added red ones were unexpected. But yes, of course I went overboard. What's the fun of shopping if you don't buy too much? ;-)

And you haven't even seen the list of all the OTHER stuff I bought from those places...... =:-o

The only amaryllis I really wanted this year that I'm not getting is Santiago. The only place I could find it available right now is on ebay, shipped from China -- and the guy doesn't say what size the bulbs are. So I was too nervous for that one. Maybe next year!
