I'm gearing up to try--what medium do you use? I grow my rexes in self-watering pots and they do well in those.

Most of my cane's are in geolite, a form of fired clay medium. I have grown a number of plants in perlite and was thinking of using it for my rex's. It's easily available and works well for so many plants.

I'm just learning about this in the hydroponics forum--someone who posted fabulous houseplant pics recommended 50% sand and 50% perlite. I have another question--must you always use an inner pot? I was wondering if I could just fill a cachepot with the medium and nutrients and go from there.

only problem I could see is maybe having too much water in the catchpot for too long. Many S/H orchid growers use only an 'outer' pot, (I have done this too) but they have one or two holes an inch or so up from the bottom.

Do you have any pictures of your plants? I love seeing the hydroponic pictures.
