Wow, you are all so right. The pictures were taken in suburb of Beijing (zone 7). They appear to only grow on rocks in the form of epiphyte or lithophyte.

Hi hopeful author, the picture is taken in China. Go to perennials forum to see more pictures. The only Beijing location I know is human cultivated. So it is possible that they are used as an annual. There are many different looks of the leaves. I don't know if they are different species or different cultivars. Each begonia plant is very small but the cluster on vertical mosses looks pretty good.

According to the Flora of China, the only Begonia species that occurs naturally anywhere near Beijing is B. grandis, and this is definitely not that species and not any that I recognize. It's a beautiful plant, but if it's cultivated then who knows where it came from originally. Do you have any photos of open flowers?
