Is it a sweet potato vine? Looks robust!

I don't think it's sweet potato vine. The sweet potato vine I grew there was chartreuse in color. This one is medium dark green. I really don't recall planting any vine on that pot. The sweet potato vine is being covered by this vine. Well if it's nice variety, I'll grow it as a hanging plant next year. :)

Yeah I'd vouch for the Sweet Potato Vine / Ipomoea too. It comes in a menagerie of colors; 'Blackie', the heavily lobed deep deep purple one is common, as is 'Margaritte / Margaritta', bright lime green. But I've seen reddish forms, variegated, tri-color greens with pink blush, etc.

Is it possible that it will change color over time? It's the second year?

No, I don't think it's sweet potato.

could it be bindweed?

Karen

Here is a link that might be useful: bindweed

Me too, it's not really sweet potato vine. Like what I said earlier, the color of my old SPV is chartreuse like Karen's. The picture of the vine I posted above is so very vast growing too. I have another one but on ground.

This looks like a "second year" sweet potato. It has happend to me as well. Last year I had a SPV like Karen's in a large pot. I left the soil with tubers in a pot and moved the pot to the basement for a winter. In the spring it started growing again but the color has changed. Right now is exactly like the one on the first picture - dark green.

ah :D

Looks like those guys(nurseries) injected some chemical to alter pigmentation :D

after careful examination, I am concluding that it is my sweet potato vine. I just don't know why it change color from chartreuse last year to normal green.

By the way, what would be the reason why my cuttings didn't thrive? It grew roots but after a week. They all died. Should it receive sunlight?

I've read it is common for the fancy colored kinds to revert to plain green.

Here's what Garden Harvest Supply has to say:
http://blog.gardenharvestsupply.com/2009/10/22/how-do-you-grow-ipomoea-marguerite/

"...The species batatas includes the food group of the sweet potato, and while the culitvars that produce the colorful annual vines will produce tubers like their cousins, these tubers will often not produce foliage similar to the previous seasonÂs growth but may revert to the previous coloration of the plantÂs heritage..."

:) Thanks for the info. Those growers know something they don't want to share. They'll lose a lot of $$ if they don't do it. Just guessing! :P

It might be similar hydrangeas' behavior when soil pH is altered.
