I border zone 7 and I was wanting to grow some cherry trees when I thought I was moving, but now I gave up on it there is no move in my visible future. The only advice I could tell you is to make sure to have 2 different types of cherry tree. I forget the technical word for it but they must have pollinators in order to produce fruit. Same as some apple trees, and blueberries, and apricot and if I am not mistaken peach trees also.

I was going to plant tartaian and bing.

Moonphase, Stella Cherries do grow here and some years fruit but if there is a freeze while the blossoms are on they will not fruit. You can grow Nanking bush cherries well if you like sour cherries. Do a "google" search for Johnsons Fruit Nursery they are in Elijay and I buy fruit there, they have good and reliable information on their website and in their catalogue.

Not zone 7, but I have 1 cherry tree and it is loaded year after year...AND couldn't tell you when it's NOT windy around here!

((sigh))I love my cherries, but I so badly want to replace it with something else that's not going to produce enough cherry seedlings to feed the world twice LOL! Considering my wintersown Blue Elderberry....
The Robin's always get the cherries at the top where I can't reach and drop the seed all over the yard and into the flower bed below. It's no fun getting at all the self-sown seedlings popping up in and below established plants...especially when I miss them and they've had a chance to really anchor roots...UGH! So I'm sniveling..I'll shut-up now!

Well...I know why I'm loaded every year. Pie cherry (sour cherry) trees are self-pollinating, but sweet cherries are not.
