NM chile seeds...suitable for winter sowing?

Hi,

I live where I cannot eat my beloved NM chile. My climate in northern Japan is not ideal for the plants, although other similar plants do grow here.

Recently ordered some seeds from NM. I have enough that I could start some in winter outside as I have done with other plants, but then plant the rest outside either by starting indoors or by direct sowing. I just wonder if winter sowing is even worth it. I've been really, really happy with winter sowing for other plants.

What do you think? I'd love your expertise.

In MY opinion... NO, I winter sow about 200 milk jugs a winter... but I don't do peppers. I do tomatoes using WS but not peppers. My season here in Southern MA is to short for peppers who like it hot

I agree. The pepper seeds need moisture and heat to germinate and don't benefit from winter sowing, they won't do anything until things warm up and could even rot in a cold damp winter.

A heat mat would be a better direction to go, they need even more warmth than other seeds to sprout.

I don't have enough summer heat to grow the NM chilies well and especially enjoy the 'Hatch'. When they show up in our markets here I buy them, roast and freeze or can so I have them on hand over winter.
